(Sylmar, CA) A woman was killed and a man was severely injured Thursday night, October 30, in a Foothill Boulevard accident involving a hit-and-run driver near Hansen Dam, authorities said.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department Valley Traffic Division, officers and firefighters responded around 8:34 p.m. to the 11700 block of Foothill Boulevard near Kagel Canyon. A 46-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man crossed the street at that time. All of a sudden, a red 2005 Honda Accord traveling northbound struck them.
The driver did not stop to identify themselves or render aid, as required by law, detectives said. When paramedics with the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived, they pronounced the woman dead at the scene. The man was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.
Authorities are searching for the hit-and-run driver and have asked anyone with information to contact LAPD Officers Reyes or Gallo of the Valley Traffic Division, or to leave an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
Overview on the Foothill Boulevard Accident
When a driver strikes a pedestrian and flees, investigators immediately reference the Hit-and-Run Statute. This law requires any driver involved in an injury or fatal crash to stop, identify themselves, and provide reasonable assistance to the injured. Failing to do so can result in felony charges and severe penalties.
Because the victims were pedestrians, the Pedestrian Right-of-Way Law also applies. It mandates that drivers exercise due care and yield to pedestrians crossing the roadway. Investigators will review lighting, visibility, and the driver’s potential speed at the time of impact.
If speed or recklessness contributed to the crash, the Reckless Driving Law may also come into play. It prohibits driving with willful or wanton disregard for the safety of others. Together, these laws will guide LAPD detectives as they work to identify the suspect and determine how the Foothill Boulevard accident occurred.
