(Los Angeles, CA) Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a driver who fled the scene after seriously injuring a pedestrian in an Eighth Street collision.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the crash occurred around 2:40 a.m. on Jan. 9. Investigators said an unidentified vehicle traveled westbound on Eighth Street when it struck a man in his 20s who was crossing the roadway. The driver then continued west toward Bixel Street without stopping.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded and transported the victim to a hospital with severe injuries. Authorities did not release the man’s name or provide an update on his current condition. Officials also did not describe the suspect vehicle or clarify whether the pedestrian was in a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision.

Police reminded motorists that drivers involved in collisions must stop as soon as it is safe, notify emergency services, and remain at the scene to identify themselves. A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the suspect.

The investigation remained ongoing as detectives with the LAPD Central Traffic Division continued reviewing evidence and seeking witnesses. Anyone with information about the hit-and-run was urged to contact Officer Herrera at 213-833-3713 or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.

Analysis on the Eighth Street Collision

When a hit-and-run leaves a pedestrian seriously injured, investigators review traffic safety laws to understand what factors may have contributed, without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews often focus on pedestrian right-of-way, driver attentiveness, and the legal duty to remain at the scene.

Because the driver allegedly fled, authorities will examine the Duty to Stop and Render Aid Law. This law requires drivers involved in collisions that result in injury to stop immediately, provide identifying information, and render reasonable assistance. Leaving the scene can delay emergency response and increase harm.

If the pedestrian was lawfully crossing the roadway, investigators may also review the Pedestrian Right-of-Way Law. This statute requires drivers to yield to pedestrians within marked crosswalks. Even outside crosswalks, drivers must exercise caution when someone is in the roadway.

Officials may further consider the Basic Speed Law if speed is determined to be relevant. This law requires motorists to travel at speeds reasonable for traffic and roadway conditions. These combined statutes help guide LAPD’s evaluation of the Eighth Street collision as detectives continue gathering evidence.

    What the Family Can Do

If you are supporting the injured man or his loved ones, staying in contact with investigators can help you receive updates and request official police reports when they become available.

You may also consider speaking with a qualified legal professional to better understand your options after a serious hit-and-run injury. Emotional support from family members, friends, or counseling services can also be important during a stressful and uncertain time.

If you have any concerns about navigating the legal process surrounding this incident, call 866-883-4318 to speak with a lawyer.
