(Long Beach, CA) Authorities identified Eduardo Jones, 69, as the victim who was struck and killed Friday morning, October 17, in a Pacific Coast Highway incident, according to police and the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The fatal collision occurred around 6:25 a.m. near the intersection of Hayes Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway. Investigators said Jones crossed the street at that time. At some point, an eastbound 2023 Ford F-150, driven by a 40-year-old Wilmington man, struck him. The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with officers.

Responding Long Beach police officers performed CPR until paramedics arrived. Despite their life-saving efforts, they pronounced Jones dead at the scene. Detectives are still working to determine whether speed, distraction, or impairment played a role.

Perspective on the Pacific Coast Highway Incident

This crash underscores the risks pedestrians face on busy multi-lane roadways like PCH, where high speeds and limited crosswalks can make crossing particularly dangerous. Investigators will examine if lighting, driver behavior, and pedestrian visibility contributed to the accident.

California Vehicle Code 21950 is a primary rule that investigators will focus on. It requires drivers to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians in both marked and unmarked crosswalks. This law also reminds pedestrians to be cautious and not step suddenly into traffic.

If speed or failure to maintain awareness contributed to the crash, the Basic Speed Law may apply. It requires all motorists to drive at a speed that is reasonable for current conditions. Even when following the posted limit, excessive speed for conditions can still be a violation.

Authorities will continue to review evidence and interview witnesses to determine the exact circumstances that led to the Pacific Coast Highway incident and the death of Eduardo Jones.
