Rialto, CA (August 17, 2023) 23-year-old Bryan Perez was arrested after Rialto Police allegedly connected his 2003 Ford Explorer to a fatal hit-and-run on Sunday. California Highway Patrol was called to assist the Rialto Police Department.

Around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, a Rialto officer drove over something on the 800 block of Rialto Avenue, east of Spruce Street. Upon further inspection, the object was revealed to be the body of 37-year-old DeAngelo Banks, from Fontana. Rialto Police Department said he had previously been hit by a car.

Police officers were able to review surveillance footage from nearby properties to identify Perez’s vehicle. Video footage  shows Perez’s vehicle traveling eastbound on Rialto Avenue, heading towards Banks before hitting him as he walked in the road.

Perez was found getting into his truck and driving away on the 500 block of Riverside Avenue. Officers pulled him over and discovered that Perez was unlicensed. He was interviewed by law enforcement and arrested for being the driver of the truck who hit and killed Banks.

He faces a charge of hit-and-run causing injury or death and is being held at the West Valley Detention Center.

    Liability In Rialto Pedestrian Accidents

Thousands of pedestrians are killed or seriously injured every year in pedestrian accidents. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “An estimated 137,000 pedestrians were treated in emergency departments for nonfatal crash-related injuries in 2017. Per trip, pedestrians are 1.5 times more likely than passenger vehicle occupants to be killed in a car crash.” There are a number of factors that could lead to a pedestrian collision including:

    • Speeding
    • Drunk driving
    • Driver distraction
    • Inclement weather

All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians. The family of any victim that died in a pedestrian collision may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
