(Los Angeles, CA) A pedestrian died Tuesday night, January 27, after being struck by a vehicle at a neighborhood intersection in a Bell Avenue crash.

CHP officers said they dispatched around 10:03 p.m. to Bell Avenue and Nadeau Street in the unincorporated Florence-Firestone area. They received reports of a traffic collision involving a pedestrian. When officers arrived, they found a person critically injured in the roadway.

Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics provided emergency medical care and transported the pedestrian to a hospital. Despite treatment, they pronounced the victim dead a short time later. Authorities did not immediately release the victim’s name, age, or gender.

Investigators did not release details about the vehicle involved or the direction it traveled at the time of the collision. Officers remained at the scene for several hours to document evidence and determine what led up to the fatal collision.

Analysis on the Bell Avenue Crash

When a pedestrian is killed at an intersection in an unincorporated area, investigators review traffic safety laws to understand what factors may have contributed, without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews often focus on driver awareness, pedestrian behavior, and speed on local roadways.

Because the collision involved a pedestrian in the roadway, investigators may examine the Duty of Care to Pedestrians Law. This law requires drivers to exercise due care to avoid colliding with pedestrians, even when pedestrians are outside of marked crosswalks. Drivers must remain alert and take reasonable action to prevent a collision whenever a person is present on or near the roadway.

Authorities may also review the Pedestrian Crossing Law. This law requires pedestrians crossing outside of marked or unmarked crosswalks to yield the right-of-way to vehicles that are close enough to pose an immediate hazard. Determining where the pedestrian was positioned and how visible they were is often a key part of these investigations.

If speed or reaction time becomes a factor, investigators could consider the Basic Speed Law. This law requires motorists to drive at speeds reasonable for traffic, visibility, and roadway conditions. Nighttime driving on neighborhood streets can reduce visibility, making speed choice especially important. Together, these statutes help investigators evaluate what may have led to the Bell Avenue crash as evidence continues to be reviewed.
