(San Diego, CA) Authorities have identified the 11-year-old boy who was killed Monday morning, October 20, in a Jackson Drive crash in San Carlos as Andrew Olsen of San Diego, according to the county Medical Examiner’s Office.
The collision happened shortly before 7:30 a.m. in the 6600 block of Jackson Drive. Police said Andrew and his two siblings were crossing the street at that time. Suddenly, a vehicle struck all three children.
Paramedics transported Andrew to Rady Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. One of his siblings suffered a compound arm fracture, while the third child’s injuries were not disclosed. The driver remained on scene and cooperated with investigators. The San Diego Police Department’s Traffic Division continues to investigate the crash.
Friends of Andrew’s family set up a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral expenses.
Perspective on the Jackson Drive Crash
Crashes involving children are among the most heartbreaking incidents officers encounter. This has renewed community concern about pedestrian safety in residential areas.
Because this tragedy involved pedestrians, California Vehicle Code 21950 is likely to be reviewed. This law requires drivers to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians crossing within marked or unmarked crosswalks. Drivers are also expected to slow down when approaching intersections where children are present.
If speed or distraction played a role, the Basic Speed Law may also apply. It mandates that drivers travel at a speed that is safe for current conditions. This includes school zones, residential traffic, and time of day — even if the speed limit has not been exceeded.
Investigators will continue analyzing evidence and witness statements to determine what led to the Jackson Drive crash and whether additional safety measures, such as crossing guards or signage, could help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
