Fresno, CA (May 25, 2024) Concern drifted through Fresno as people learned of a pedestrian accident involving a 9-year-old boy. Thankfully, the child survived, but was left with injuries, including a broken leg. The accident took place at Michigan Avenue and Orchard Street in front of Birney Elementary on Wednesday, May 22nd, at approximately 7:30 a.m.

A vehicle was driving past Birney Elementary School in Frenso on Wednesday morning when a 9-year-old boy suddenly ran across the street. The driver of the vehicle had little time to react and ended up striking the child. Initial reports indicated that the child had just been dropped off for school when the accident occurred. The driver of the vehicle quickly stopped and called 911 and stayed with the child.

Emergency crews hurried to the scene and found the child lying in the roadway, crying. He was hurt and frightened, but officers reported that he is expected to make a full recovery. Paramedics arrived at the scene and found the boy on the ground with non-life-threatening injuries, including a broken leg. The boy was gently placed on a stretcher as paramedics encouraged him and tried to keep him calm. He was placed in the ambulance and taken to a local hospital to receive treatment.

Officers do not suspect alcohol or drugs to be factors in this collision. Following the investigation they determined that the child did not use a designated crosswalk at the time of the accident. Officers would like to encourage parents to teach their children to use crosswalks and to follow all safety rules when crossing streets. They also want to remind drivers that they should slow down and be extra alert when driving through school zones. Children often forget to follow rules and do not consider the dangers. It is up to drivers to keep children safe!
