Chino Hills, CA (May 7, 2024) A tragic accident occurred in Chino Hills on Monday that left a community in shock. Two Caltrans Workers were doing cleanup below the 71 Freeway when they were struck by a box truck. The fatal accident happened at approximately 8:30 a.m., not far from Euclid Avenue, according to reports.

The governor’s Clean California Initiative is well underway and workers are cleaning up various areas of the state. Two contracted workers with Caltrans were doing just that on Monday morning when they lost their lives. The two workers were cleaning the area along the embankment that is below the 71 Freeway, as traffic passed. Without warning a white box truck suddenly lost control and swerved off the road and down the embankment, where it hit the two workers.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene within minutes and found the box truck down the embankment with the two workers lying near it. Paramedics rushed to the two men lying in the embankment and found one of them unresponsive. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The second worker was rushed to a local hospital for treatment, but his injuries were too severe and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The driver of the box truck remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities following this fatal collision. Officers do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in this deadly accident and they are diligently working to determine what exactly happened to cause this accident. The California Highway Patrol stated that this terrible accident serves as a reminder that drivers should slow down when they see a vehicle or pedestrians on the side of a highway or freeway. Officers Rodrigo Jimenez wants to remind drivers that it’s the law to change lanes if a vehicle is parked on the shoulder of the highway. “If you’re not able to do that, at least slow down.”
