(Hollywood, CA) Authorities are investigating the death of a person found Tuesday night, November 11, in the lanes of the northbound Hollywood (101) Freeway during what officials described as a 101 Freeway fatal crash, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP Officer Elizabeth Kravig said reports of a body reached the CHP at around 9:24 p.m. just north of Santa Monica Boulevard. Responding officers found a person deceased in the far-right lane, though the individual’s name, age, and gender have not yet been released.
Authorities issued a SigAlert at 9:50 p.m., closing lanes 2, 3, and 4 of the northbound 101 Freeway. During that time, investigators examined the scene and cleared the roadway. One lane remained open for limited traffic. CHP officers canceled the SigAlert just before midnight.
The cause of the fatal incident remains under investigation, and it was not immediately clear how the person came to be in the freeway lanes.
Overview on the 101 Freeway Fatal Crash
When a vehicle crashes into a person or found deceased on a freeway, investigators examine the Pedestrian Prohibition Law. This statute prohibits pedestrians from walking on freeways except during emergencies. CHP will review whether the victim was on foot prior to the collision or if other circumstances led to their presence in traffic lanes.
If a vehicle was involved, the Duty to Exercise Due Care Law may apply. It requires drivers to remain vigilant and take reasonable steps to avoid striking a pedestrian or obstruction, even in unexpected situations.
Additionally, the Basic Speed Law ensures drivers operate at safe speeds for prevailing conditions, including visibility and traffic flow. These statutes will guide investigators in determining the sequence of events and liability in the 101 Freeway fatal crash.
