(East Hollywood, CA) A Southbound 101 Freeway crash involving multiple vehicles left Villanelle Thompson, 26, dead early Tuesday morning, October 28, authorities said.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred around 12:30 a.m. near Melrose Avenue. Preliminary reports indicate that a motorcycle and a white Honda Pilot were involved in the crash. As a result of the initial collision, two additional vehicles were involved shortly after.

When Los Angeles Fire Department firefighters arrived, they found Thompson trapped under a red Toyota Corolla trapped inside. They used hydraulic tools and an airbag system to free him. Despite rescue efforts, Thompson was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the CHP.

The crash forced the closure of three southbound lanes for several hours. A SigAlert was issued shortly after the incident and lifted around 5:30 a.m. when all lanes were cleared.

Overview on the Southbound 101 Freeway Crash

In a multi-vehicle freeway collision like this one, investigators often begin with the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to operate at a speed that is reasonable and safe for traffic, weather, and roadway conditions. Even slight excess speed on crowded freeways can reduce reaction time and increase the severity of a crash.

If distraction or careless driving is suspected, the Reckless Driving Law could apply. This law prohibits driving in a manner that shows a willful disregard for the safety of others. Each of these statutes will help the CHP determine what led to the death of Villanelle Thompson in the Southbound 101 Freeway crash.

    Guidance for Thompson’s Family

You should remain in contact with the California Highway Patrol for updates about the ongoing investigation. Request the official traffic collision report once it becomes available.

When the time feels right, consider speaking with an attorney experienced in motorcycle collision cases. They can explain your options for seeking justice and recovery after such a devastating loss.

Lastly, allow yourself time to grieve and heal. Lean on family, friends, or local counseling services for support. Losing a loved one in a sudden crash is deeply painful, and connecting with caring people can help you begin to move forward.

If you have any concerns about navigating the legal process surrounding this incident, call 866-883-4318 to speak with a lawyer.
