(East Hollywood, CA) A motorcyclist was killed early Tuesday, October 28, in a Southbound 101 Freeway crash involving multiple vehicles that left the rider trapped beneath a car, authorities said.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred around 12:30 a.m. near Melrose Avenue. Preliminary reports indicate that a motorcycle and a white Honda Pilot were involved in the crash. As a result of the initial collision, two additional vehicles were involved shortly after.
When Los Angeles Fire Department firefighters arrived, they found the victim trapped under a red Toyota Corolla trapped inside. They used hydraulic tools and an airbag system to free the victim. Despite rescue efforts, the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the CHP.
The crash forced the closure of three southbound lanes for several hours. A SigAlert was issued shortly after the incident and lifted around 5:30 a.m. when all lanes were cleared.
Overview on the Southbound 101 Freeway Crash
In a multi-vehicle freeway collision like this one, investigators often begin with the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to operate at a speed that is reasonable and safe for traffic, weather, and roadway conditions. Even slight excess speed on crowded freeways can reduce reaction time and increase the severity of a crash.
If distraction or careless driving is suspected, the Reckless Driving Law could apply. This law prohibits driving in a manner that shows a willful disregard for the safety of others. Each of these statutes will help the CHP determine what led to the Southbound 101 Freeway crash.
