(Irvine, CA) A motorcyclist was killed early Tuesday morning, October 28, in a San Diego Freeway collision that involved multiple vehicles on the southbound 405, authorities said.

According to early reports from the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 5:45 a.m. just north of Bake Parkway. While riding on the freeway, the motorcyclist went down, landing on the road. Shortly after, multiple vehicles struck the downed rider.

When authorities arrived, they closed all main southbound lanes of the 405 for several hours. Meanwhile, investigators worked at the scene, with CHP officers diverting traffic into the carpool lane. The Orange County Coroner’s Office responded and will release the victim’s identity once next of kin have been notified.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the victim.

Overview on the San Diego Freeway Collision

In freeway crashes involving motorcycles, investigators often begin with the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to maintain a speed that is safe for the flow of traffic and conditions. On busy freeways like the 405, even slight speeding or abrupt lane changes can quickly turn dangerous.

Because the rider was struck after falling, the Following Too Closely Law may also be considered. It prohibits drivers from following another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, given the speed of traffic. This helps ensure drivers have enough distance to react to sudden hazards, such as a fallen motorcyclist.

If multiple vehicles were involved, the Reckless Driving Law might also apply. It addresses conduct showing willful or wanton disregard for the safety of others, such as unsafe passing or failure to maintain control. These statutes together help investigators determine how the San Diego Freeway collision unfolded.

    Support for the Family

You should stay in contact with the CHP and the Orange County Coroner’s Office to receive updates about the investigation. Requesting the official collision report can also provide clarity as details become available.

When you are ready, you may want to consult an attorney who understands motorcycle fatalities and freeway accidents. They can help guide you through potential legal or insurance matters.

Finally, take care of yourself and those close to you during this difficult time. Lean on family, friends, or counseling services in the Irvine area for comfort and emotional support as you process this sudden loss.

If you have any concerns about navigating the legal process surrounding this incident, call 866-883-4318 to speak with a lawyer.
