(San Diego, CA) A 33-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries in a Clairemont Mesa Boulevard crash Friday night, December 19.
Officers responded around 8:40 p.m. to the 3700 block of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard where the victim rode a 2009 Suzuki motorcycle eastbound. Police say a 49-year-old man driving a 2014 Nissan Sentra attempted an illegal left turn into a shopping center. As a result, it caused the motorcycle to strike the passenger side of the vehicle. First responders treated the rider on scene and rushed to the hospital with severe trauma. Doctors determined the rider sustained a brain bleed and multiple lacerations.
Investigators say alcohol did not appear to be a factor. The SDPD Traffic Division continues to investigate the collision.
Overview on the Clairemont Mesa Boulevard Crash
When drivers turn across opposing traffic, investigators often reference the Right-of-Way for Left Turns Law. This law requires left-turning motorists to yield to oncoming vehicles that may present a hazard, and violations frequently lead to high-impact collisions like this one.
Because the motorcyclist was lane-splitting before the crash, authorities may review the Motorcycle Lane Splitting Guidelines. Lane splitting is legal in California, but riders must operate safely and at speeds appropriate for traffic conditions.
Speed assessments are further guided by the Basic Speed Law, which requires motorists to travel at speeds reasonable for roadway, lighting, and traffic conditions. Even small speed miscalculations can reduce reaction time and elevate injury severity for motorcyclists.
