Pomona, CA (May 3, 2024) 75-year-old Ann Wesson Williams was driving home from a fundraiser on Saturday evening, April 20th, when she was hit by a drunk driver. Williams and the drunk driver, 45-year-old Robert Lopez, were both killed in this traumatic two-vehicle collision. The fatal collision occurred at the intersection of Ninth Street and Reservoir Street, just before 7:00 p.m. and left a community clouded in sadness.

Williams was on her way home from a fundraising event for the unhoused in Pomona and surrounding areas. As she drove home, she continued through the intersection of Ninth Street and Reservoir Street on a green light. As she entered the intersection, Lopez ran the red light and came speeding through the intersection. At approximately 6:55 p.m., he slammed into Williams’ vehicle and then knocked over a light pole before crashing into a house.

The Pomona Police Department arrived at the scene and found the two vehicles with major damage. A light pole was laying on the ground and Lopez’s vehicle sat next to the house it had just hit. Paramedics at the scene found Lopez with fatal injuries and pronounced him dead at the scene, reports indicated. Williams was found alive, but she had sustained life-threatening injuries during the collision. She was rushed to a local hospital, via ambulance, to receive emergency treatment. Reports indicated that Williams’ heart stopped while at the hospital and she was rushed into emegency surgery. She hung on for 24 hours, fighting for her life. The staff did everything they could, but Williams’ injuries proved to be too severe and she eventually succumbed to them. Sadly, she was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Officers investigated the scene and watched as tow trucks hauled the two wrecked vehicles from the scene. Crews worked to clear the scene of debris and glass and the fallen light pole and damaged house remained as reminders of the tragic accident that had occurred.

Williams’ daughter said that her mother was retired and worked as a criminal counselor at the Chino State Prison for years. She was a mother to four children and a grandmother to six grandchildren, of whom she was so proud. Williams’ family has created a GoFundMe page to help the family cover funeral costs during this difficult time.

All of us at Accident News Now extend our deepest condolences to the family of Ann Lee Wesson-Williams following this senseless and devastating collision.
