Escondido, CA (April 28, 2024) The unimaginable took place in Escondido on Saturday night, when a DUI driver claimed the life of a 13-year-old boy. Junior Lopez was said to be a humble boy with a goofy sense of humor, according to his family. A two-vehicle collision took place in North County just before 10:00 p.m., officers reported. A DUI driver hit another vehicle at the intersection of Country Club Lane and North Broadway.

Minutes before 10:00 p.m. on Saturday night, April 27th, 20-year-old Alexander Tito Oroz was driving through Escondido with a 13-year-old boy in the passenger seat. Oroz collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Country Club Lane and North Broadway.

Police officers and paramedics arrived at the scene and found the two vehicles with major damage. Debris and glass littered the intersection in every direction. Paramedics with Escondido Fire rushed to the vehicles to give medical attention to anyone in need. They found three people with life-threatening injuries and began performing life-saving measures on them. They were loaded into ambulances and rushed to local hospitals for treatment. Authorities said a man was sent to Sharp Memorial Hospital, a woman was taken to Scripps LA Jolla Hospital and 13-year-old Lopez was rushed to Palomar Medical Center.

The medical staff at Palomar Medical Center did everything within their power to try and save Lopez’s life, but his injuries were too severe. Sadly, they pronounced Junior Lopez dead at the hospital.

Oroz, who was driving one of the vehicles involved, was intoxicated following the accident. He was taken to Tri-City Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Once he received a medical release, officers arrested him and booked him into Vista Jail. He faces charges of suspicion of felony DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter.
