Serra Mesa, CA (August 29, 2023) A man was arrested for a DUI following a fatal crash on I-15 in Serra Mesa early on Sunday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol. The driver apparently drove the wrong way on Interstate 15 and crashed into another car.
The crash was reported around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday on southbound I-15, off Aero Drive. An Infiniti SUV was traveling north in the southbound lanes of I-15 when it crashed head-on into a Honda Fit. A 32-year-old San Diego woman was driving the Honda and sustained fatal injuries. She died before they could get her to the hospital.

Firefighters at the scene had to use tools to get the driver and passenger out of the damaged car. A female passenger in the Honda was sustained major injuries in the collision and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Jesse Matias.
After the Infiniti hit the Honda, it continued north and struck a Nissan Altima. The 58-year-old woman driving the Nissan was uninjured.
The California Highway Patrol said the driver, identified as James A. Cox, was arrested for suspicion of driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. He was also arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving the wrong way, causing injury or death.
