(Lamont, CA) A man killed in a hit-and-run South H Street collision earlier this month has been identified as Zacarias Ecahua Chipahua of Lamont, 26, according to the Kern County Coroner’s Office.
The crash occurred around 5:18 a.m. on October 2 at the intersection of South H Street and Houghton Road, the California Highway Patrol said. After conducting a preliminary investigation, authorities learned that a 33-year-old man drove a Chevrolet Impala with Chipahua inside. The driver approached the intersection, stopping before continuing. While turning south onto the street, a white 2008 Chevrolet Silverado failed to stop and crashed into the Impala.
When authorities arrived, they found Chipahua, seated in the Impala’s front passenger seat, pronounced him dead at the scene. The driver of the Impala sustained minor injuries, and a 45-year-old passenger was taken to Kern Medical with moderate injuries. The Silverado’s driver fled on foot and has not been found. It remains unclear whether alcohol or drugs played a role. Anyone with information is urged to contact the CHP Bakersfield Area Office.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the victim.
Perspective on the South H Street Collision
Deadly hit-and-run crashes like this the one that killed Zacarias Ecahua Chipahua often highlight the serious consequences of ignoring traffic controls and fleeing the scene of a crash. This hit-and-run has drawn attention to the dangers of running stop signs on intersections and the importance of remaining at the scene.
The key law in this case is the Hit-and-Run Statute. This requires drivers involved in injury or fatal crashes to stop immediately, identify themselves, and render aid. Leaving the scene is a felony offense and carries significant penalties under California law.
Because the Silverado driver failed to obey a stop sign, California Vehicle Code 22450 may also apply. This statute mandates that drivers come to a complete stop at posted intersections, proceeding when safe to do so. Violating this rule can lead to catastrophic results, as seen in this crash.
Authorities continue to investigate the South H Street collision as they work to locate the driver responsible for Zacarias Ecahua Chipahua’s death and ensure accountability under state law.
