(Los Angeles, CA) Two people sustained injuries in a Washington Boulevard building crash with a restaurant supply business in Los Angeles.

On Thursday, August 14, a little before 11 p.m., the Washington Boulevard building crash occurred. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, it happened at the intersection of Washington Boulevard and Vermont Avenue.

When police arrived, they found several vehicles crashed into the side of a business in the Pico-Union District. When they assessed the Washington Boulevard building crash, they determined two people sustained injuries. Paramedics dispatched to the collision site shortly after and transported the two injured people to a hospital for treatment. The crash also involved a San Bernardino County deputy and a K-9 unit, neither sustaining injuries.

Legal Opinion of the Washington Boulevard Building Crash

The Washington Boulevard building crash in the Pico-Union District raises several legal considerations under California law. Several vehicles ended up crashing into a business, indicating a possible violation of California Vehicle Code 22350. This section, or the “Basic Speed Law”, requires drivers to travel at a safe speed and maintain control of their vehicles. Depending on the findings, there may also be implications under VEH 22107, which governs safe turning or lane changes. There could also be a violation of VEH 23103, which prohibits reckless driving.

The involvement of a San Bernardino County deputy and a K-9 unit adds complexity. Law enforcement vehicles have certain exemptions under VEH 21055 when responding to emergencies. If the deputy was in pursuit or responding to an urgent call, some actions may be legally justified. Emergency vehicle exemptions do not excuse reckless disregard for public safety, and liability can still apply if the deputy’s actions directly caused the crash.

The injured victims can pursue personal injury claims under California law for the Washington Boulevard building crash. They can seek damages for medical expenses, lost income, and pain and suffering. If the deputy is found at fault, claims against a government entity must follow the California Government Claims Act. This law imposes a strict six-month deadline to file a claim before pursuing a lawsuit. The business that sustained property damage can also seek compensation for repairs and lost income during closure.

What the Injured Parties Can Do

The injured individuals should contact a personal injury attorney immediately. The attorney can obtain the LAPD’s collision report of the Washington Boulevard building crash, surveillance footage from nearby businesses, and any available dashcam or bodycam recordings. They should also determine whether the deputy was on duty in an official capacity, which will affect how claims are filed. Because government liability cases have shorter deadlines and stricter procedural requirements, prompt legal action is critical. Preserving evidence now will strengthen any future claim, whether against a private driver, the County of San Bernardino, or both, and will help the victims secure the compensation they deserve.
