Carson City, NV (April 24, 2024) An early morning collision on Interstate 580 in Carson City claimed two lives on Wednesday morning, April 24th. 36-year-old Alejandra Hernandez Valtierra and 48-year-old Viola Santoyo Huizar were both killed in this collision. It happened just before 5:00 a.m. near Fairview Boulevard and Snyder Avenue, officers said. The Nevada State Police reported that the fatal accident was caused by a wrong-way driver.

The sun had yet to rise over Nevada as vehicles traveled along Interstate 580 in the early morning darkness. Headlights led the way as early morning motorists avoided rush hour traffic. At approximately 4:51 a.m., a vehicle traveled north in the southbound lanes of the freeway. The wrong-way vehicle slammed, head-on, into another vehicle, officers reported.

Flashing lights lit up the early morning sky and sirens blared as emergency crews rushed to the scene on Interstate 580. Upon arrival, officers said one of the vehicles was on fire and both were completely smashed and damaged. Firefighters quickly put out of the flames and began searching the vehicle for victims. Officers immediately closed the interstate, diverting drivers to an alternate route. Paramedics hurried to the two damaged vehicles and found two people, later identified as Valtierra and Huizar, who had been killed in the collision. Sadly, they pronounced the two dead at the scene and called a coroner.

Investigators gathered evidence and took statements for those who saw what happened on this Carson City freeway. Crews had to clean glass, debris and liquid from the roadway. Both vehicles were completely destroyed and had to be removed from the interstate by tow trucks, officers reported.
