Butte County, CA (June 3, 2024) A sudden and stressful accident took place in South Butte County on Thursday morning, May 30th, when a driver swerved to avoid a deer. The vehicle slammed into a tree leaving both the driver and the passenger with significant injuries. The accident occurred on Lower Honcut Road just after midnight, officers reported.

It was shortly after midnight as a vehicle drove along Lower Honcut Road in Butte County. The road was dark and only the vehicle’s headlights illuminated the way. Suddenly, a deer darted across the road, directly in front of the vehicle. The driver, described only as a female, immediately reacted by swerving to miss the deer. She then lost control of the vehicle and went off the road at a fairly high speed. The vehicle crashed into a tree and came to an abrupt and dramatic stop.

The California Highway Patrol was the first to arrive at the scene. Their emergency lights could be seen growing brighter as they approached with sirens wailing. They found the vehicle with major damage, sitting on the side the of the road. Paramedics arrived and hurried to evaluate the occupants of the vehicle. They found the female driver and a male passenger, both with significant injuries, which included broken bones. They were both taken to a nearby hospital via ambulance to receive further medical treatment.

Officers continue to investigate this accident to determine exactly what occurred on Lower Honcut Road in South Butte County. They had to call a tow truck to come to the scene and remove the badly damaged vehicles from the roadside and debris had to be cleaned up from where the vehicle hit the tree. Motorists should always drive cautiously at night and be ready for any animal that might attempt to dart out in front of them.
