Buellton, CA (August 5, 2024) A two-vehicle collision in Buellton sent two people to the hospital on Monday morning, August 5th, officers reported. The injury accident took place on Highway 246 and left one person trapped inside their vehicle.

An elderly man was driving a red Tesla along Highway 246 in Buellton on Monday morning, when he was struck by a silver Chevrolet Suburban SUV. A man and a woman were inside the Suburban. It struck the driver’s side of the Tesla, according to reports. The impact caused the driver’s side airbags to deploy and left the driver’s side completely smashed, denting into the vehicle. The Suburban sustained serious front-end damage, officers reported.

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department arrived at the scene and found the two damaged vehicles in the median. The Suburban was sitting up against the smashed driver’s side of the Tesla, leaving the elderly man trapped inside. Officers had to free the victim from his vehicle. He was placed in an ambulance and taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital to receive treatment for serious injuries, according to the SBC Fire Department.

The woman in the Suburban sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the accident and was transported to Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital. She is expected to make a full recovery. The man inside the SUV sustained minor injuries in the accident, but refused medical treatment, officers reported.

Officers gathered evidence and are working to determine what exactly took place on Highway 246. They are also working to determine who was at fault. Tow trucks had to remove the two damaged vehicles from the roadway and crews worked to remove the debris that was left behind.
