El Dorado County, CA (July 28, 2024) The community of El Dorado County was saddened as they learned of an accident that claimed a life in their area. 79-year-old Stefan Key was killed in a head-on crash on State Route Highway 193, according to reports. A 4-year-old passenger in one of the vehicles was also seriously injured. The fatal accident occurred around 1:42 p.m. near Circle Drive, not too far from Placerville.

A Freightliner bucket truck hauling a trailer and a Toyota Highlander were both traveling along SR-193 in El Dorado County on Thursday afternoon. Suddenly, one of the vehicles drifted and ended up in the path of the other vehicle, although officers are still not sure exactly what happened. The two vehicles collided, head-on, causing a deadly crash, according to reports. The vehicles blocked a portion of the highway and glass and debris were tossed in all directions around the scene.

Authorities arrived and found the two vehicles with collision damage. The Toyota had sustained extensive damage and officers found its driver deceased. The driver, 79-year-old Stefan Kay from Hidden Valley Lake was pronounced dead at the scene, reports indicated. He had a 4-year-old passenger in the vehicle with him who sustained serious injuries. Paramedics requested an air ambulance to come to the scene and the child was airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento to receive treatment.

Officers began investigating the collision in an effort to better understand what had happened to cause it. They are also working to determine who was at fault, officers said. A tow truck was called to the scene to remove the Toyota from the roadway and crews worked diligently to remove the litter from the road that had been left behind by the crash.
