(San Diego, CA) Two people were killed in a southbound 5 Freeway accident early Sunday morning, March 29, after a crash on a South Bay transition ramp sent an SUV into the Sweetwater River.
California Highway Patrol officers responded shortly before 1 a.m. to the connector from westbound State Route 54 to southbound Interstate 5. Investigators said a Volkswagen Eos crashed into the rear of a Jeep Liberty on the transition ramp. The force of the collision pushed the Jeep off the bridge and into the river below.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and located the submerged vehicle. The driver, Ignacio Pedroza, 60, and his passenger, Monica Pedroza, 53, both of Chula Vista, were pronounced dead. Authorities have not released additional details about the driver of the Volkswagen.
Officials have not said what led to the initial collision or whether speed or roadway conditions were factors. The investigation remains ongoing as CHP continues to gather information about the crash.
Overview On The Southbound 5 Freeway Accident
When a fatal rear-end collision occurs on a freeway transition ramp, investigators review traffic laws to understand contributing factors. These reviews focus on following distance, speed, and driver attentiveness without assigning fault prematurely.
Because the crash involved a vehicle striking another from behind, officers may examine the Following Distance Law. This law requires drivers to maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead. Transition ramps can involve slowing or merging traffic, which increases the need for careful spacing. Investigators will consider whether adequate distance was maintained before the impact.
If speed played a role, authorities may review the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to travel at speeds that are safe for roadway and traffic conditions. Ramps and connectors often require reduced speeds due to curves and elevation changes. Investigators may evaluate whether speed limited the driver’s ability to react in time.
When vehicles travel on elevated roadways, officers may also consider the Unsafe Driving Movement Law. This law requires drivers to ensure movements can be made safely without endangering others. Sudden or unsafe actions can lead to severe outcomes, especially near barriers or edges. These factors may help explain what led to the southbound 5 Freeway accident.
