(Malibu, CA) Two people were killed and another was seriously injured Thursday evening, December 4, in a State Route 1 crash that shut down both directions of Pacific Coast Highway near Deer Creek Road.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened around 6:55 p.m. along State Route 1. A 25-year-old man driving a Dodge Charger northbound reportedly crossed over the double yellow lines into oncoming traffic. At that moment, he struck a Chevrolet Tahoe driven by a 53-year-old man.
Both drivers were unresponsive when first responders arrived. First responders pronounced both victims dead at the scene. A passenger in the Charger sustained major injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.
Alcohol appears to be a factor, CHP said. Video from the scene showed one vehicle fully engulfed in flames as multiple agencies responded and shut down the roadway for the investigation.
Overview on the State Route 1 Crash
When a driver crosses into oncoming lanes, investigators routinely examine the Right-Side-of-the-Road Law. This law prohibits traveling left of double yellow lines except in limited, specific circumstances. In a situation like this, crossing the centerline directly creates the conditions for a head-on crash, making this statute a key part of the analysis.
Because speed and roadway conditions can magnify the severity of a head-on collision, officers also consider the Basic Speed Law. This rule requires motorists to drive at speeds that are reasonable and safe for visibility, curves, and traffic conditions. Even without definitive speed findings yet, investigators assess whether a safe speed could have provided more reaction time.
If alcohol is suspected, analysts apply the DUI Prohibition Law. This statute makes it illegal to operate a vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs. Impairment can slow reaction times and contribute to a driver drifting over centerlines. Its relevance becomes central as authorities determine what contributed to the State Route 1 crash.
