(Long Beach, CA) Two people were killed and three others were injured Sunday night, January 4, in a Sixth Street accident at Atlantic Avenue.

Authorities received reports of the crash at around 10:15 p.m., involving three vehicles. Police say a vehicle speeding eastbound on Sixth Street struck two southbound vehicles on Atlantic Avenue. This caused one of the vehicles to overturn in the middle of the roadway. The suspect driver fled before officers arrived. First responders pronounced a man and a woman dead at the scene, and three additional adults were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Review on the Sixth Street Accident

Because this collision involved a driver allegedly speeding through an intersection, investigators often review California’s Basic Speed Law. This statute requires all motorists to operate at speeds that are reasonable for conditions, including traffic, roadway design, and visibility. Excessive speed can significantly increase stopping distance and impact severity.

Given that the suspect fled the scene, the Hit-and-Run Statute becomes central to the investigation. This law requires drivers involved in injury or fatal crashes to remain on-site, render aid, and provide identification. Leaving the scene can result in severe felony charges.

Because multiple vehicles were struck in the intersection, police may also examine the Right-of-Way at Intersections Law. This rule outlines which motorists must yield when crossing paths. Investigators can use vehicle positions, impact points, and signal timing to determine whether a right-of-way violation contributed to the crash.

Guidance for the Victim’s Loved Ones

Family members and community residents seeking updates may contact the Long Beach Police Department’s Collision Investigation Detail once the full report becomes available.

Those mourning the loss of loved ones may benefit from speaking with a wrongful death attorney to understand potential compensation for funeral expenses, emotional damages, and other losses.

Local grief support services in Long Beach can provide assistance as the community processes the impact of the Sixth Street accident.

If you have any concerns about navigating the legal process surrounding this incident, call 866-883-4318 to speak with a lawyer.
