The California Highway Patrol arrived at the scene within minutes, according to reports, and had to shut down a section of Ortega Highway. The Fire Department tried to divert traffic away from the scene, as the eastbound lanes of the highway had been closed until the scene had been cleared. Paramedics at the scene hurried to the vehicles, ready to give aid to anyone who was injured in the accident. Sadly, they found a passenger in one of the vehicles who did not survive the collision. Authorities pronounced the victim dead at the scene and waited for the coroner.

Officers investigated the scene and are working to determine what exactly happened on the Ortega Highway in San Juan Capistrano that afternoon. They are also hoping to discover who was at fault for this fatal collision. Officers called for a tow truck to remove the damaged vehicles from the scene and crews spend hours cleaning up the debris that had been thrown in every direction during the crash.
