Stevinson, CA (October 14, 2024) The small community of Stevinson was left in shock following a traffic collision that claimed one life on State Route 165. The fatal accident occurred in the early morning hours of Friday, October 11th, 2024. Several vehicles were involved, according to reports, in the Merced County collision.
It was early morning on Friday, October 11th, 2024, as vehicles moved along State Route 165 at a steady pace. Suddenly, and for reasons that remain unknown, at least three vehicles collided, head-on, on the highway. Reports indicated that a small sedan, a dump truck and a motor vehicle were all involved in this fatal collision. The damaged vehicles blocked both lanes of the highway, becoming a traffic hazard. Officers reported that a chain reaction of smaller accidents occurred due to the blocked highway.
Officers arrived at he scene to find the SUV on fire, according to reports. Firefighters worked quickly to put out the flames before authorities could help those who had been injured. Suddenly, a red Honda also caught on fire, officers reported. Firefighters extinguished the fire and had to free the driver. Officers reported that a semi was also involved in the collision and a brush fire had to be put out as well.
The road was closed from SR-140 to Henry Miller Avenue as authorities worked to help those involved in the collision and then investigated the scene. Sadly, they found one person with fatal injuries, according to reports. With heavy hearts, they pronounced the victim dead at the scene and called for a coroner. The dump truck had to be removed from the scene by a tow truck, due to the significant amount of damage it had sustained. Officers are working to determine now only what caused this deadly, multi-vehicle crash, but also who was responsible.
