Chula Vista, CA (March 26, 2024) A sad situation unfolded on Interstate 5 in Chula Vista on Sunday. Two vehicles, said to be racing, suddenly collided, claiming the life of one person, according to officers. The deadly crash happened shortly after 5:00 p.m. near Palomar Street on March 24th. Officers reported that the accident ended with one of the vehicles rolling and then catching on fire.

As vehicles headed up and down Interstate 5 on Sunday, two vehicles were racing, according to witnesses. Initial reports indicated that a female driver with three passengers was in a white Ford Mustang with a  black stripe. A male was driving a BMW. The driver of the Mustang saw the speeding BMW coming up, about to pass her, so she quickly changed lanes. The driver of the BMW, a male, went around her and then veered towards her until his vehicle hit the drivers side front end of the woman’s car. Following the crash, the BMW went across all lanes of traffic before going off the road and crashing into a tree. The BMW then began to roll. As it finally came to a stop on its roof, it caught on fire, officers reported.

Emergency crews quickly arrived at the scene and found the BMW completely destroyed and on fire, according to initial reports. Paramedics at the scene hurried to give medical aid to anyone in need. They found good Samaritans performing CPR on the male and they took over. Sadly, they discovered that the male driver of the BMW had been thrown from the car as it rolled and he did not survive. With heavy hearts, they pronounced the victim dead at the scene. The driver of the Mustang fled the scene following the accident, according to reports.

Officers closed the lanes of the freeway for over two hours as investigators gathered evidence and tried to determine what caused this fatal collision. Crews cleaned the scene of glass and debris and a tow truck was called to remove at least one of the vehicles from the freeway.
