Cambria, CA (July 6, 2024) A traumatic collision took place on Highway 46 in Cambria on Thursday, July 4th, according to reports. The single-vehicle accident happened around 3:10 p.m. and left two people with serious injuries. One injured person had to be airlifted from the scene with life-threatening injuries, reports indicated.
A blue Tesla was traveling east along Highway 46 when it suddenly swerved off the road and fell nearly 200 feet. It went down the side of a steep hill before finally coming to a stop at the bottom. The vehicle left a trail of debris behind it and someone contacted 911 to report the accident. The car was easily visible from the roadway, officers reported.
Cal Fire San Luis Obispo arrived at the scene with the California Highway Patrol and discovered that their job would be a little more challenging due to the terrain. The drop that led down to the vehicle was steep and emergency crews worked together to access the vehicle. Firefighters were able to free both occupants from the vehicle, but had to call for a helicopter to come to the scene and transport one victim to a local hospital to receive emergency treatment. The other occupant was also injured in the collision and rushed to a hospital, via ambulance, officials reported.
Officers at the scene began gathering evidence and working to determine what caused this collision. They are determined to understand what caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle and go over the side of the road, reports indicated. Crews worked together to remove the damaged Tesla from the cliff side before cleaning up the remaining debris from the scene.
