Officers reported that the accident appeared to involve two separate collisions. One accident involved two vehicles and the other involved three, officers reported. The collision left one person with serious injuries.
It happened on Highway 99 at Highway 219, just before 6:00 a.m. For reasons that remain unclear, two vehicles collided on Highway 99. Following this initial collision, three other vehicles collided as well, in the same area. Officers believe it could have been a chain reaction collision. The vehicles blocked the roadway, causing major traffic issues in the area.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene and found the damaged vehicles in the middle of the roadway. They hurried to the cars, ready to help anyone who had been injured. Reports indicated that they found one person with serious injuries. Paramedics transported the victim to a nearby hospital to receive treatment and officers began investigating the scene. They are determined to uncover not only what caused this accident on Highway 99 in Salida, but also who was at fault. Following the investigation, two trucks removed the damaged vehicles from the roadway and crews cleaned up the glass and debris so traffic could resume normally.
