(Long Beach, CA) A man identified as Mark Cassidy, 69, was killed Monday morning, October 27, in a San Diego Freeway collision involving two vehicles, authorities said.

According to Officer Erik Larsen of the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 7:20 a.m. on the northbound 405 Freeway near the Long Beach (710) Freeway interchange.

Paramedics from the Long Beach Fire Department performed CPR on Cassidy, but despite their efforts, they pronounced him dead at the scene at 7:51 a.m., officials said.

Authorities issued a SigAlert shortly after the collision, closing the HOV lane and the first and second lanes of the northbound freeway. The alert remained in effect for several hours, authorities lifting it around 11:10 a.m. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the CHP.

Overview on the San Diego Freeway Collision

In freeway collisions involving multiple vehicles, investigators often look to the Basic Speed Law. It requires drivers to operate at a speed that is reasonable and safe for current traffic and roadway conditions. Even slight speeding or tailgating can contribute to serious crashes, particularly during morning commute hours.

If the collision involved a sudden lane movement, the Unsafe Lane Change Law may also apply. This statute requires drivers to ensure a lane change or merge can be made safely before moving. CHP investigators will examine whether improper lane use or merging played a role in the incident.

Additionally, the Following Too Closely Law may be reviewed. It prohibits drivers from following another vehicle more closely than is reasonable. These statutes will help determine how the San Diego Freeway collision occurred and whether any violations contributed to the fatal crash.

    Support for Cassidy’s Family

If you are related to Mark Cassidy, you should remain in contact with the California Highway Patrol’s South Los Angeles office for updates on the investigation and access to the official collision report once it’s available. This document can provide key details about how the crash unfolded.

When ready, consider speaking with an attorney who has experience in freeway and wrongful-death cases. They can explain your rights and help guide your family through the next steps toward accountability and closure.

Finally, allow time to grieve and seek support from loved ones or local counseling services in Long Beach. Losing someone suddenly in a freeway crash is devastating, and surrounding yourself with care and community can be an important part of healing.
