Sanger, CA (August 23, 2024) A 19-year-old tragedy lost his life in a Sanger collision on Monday morning, August 19th, 2024. Joe Vargas was killed when his vehicle landed in a canal near the intersection of East California Avenue and South Rainbow Route, at approximately 5:45 in the morning, officers reports.
The sun had yet to rise over Sanger, California, on August 23rd as 19-year-old Joe Vargas drove through the early morning darkness. He suddenly lost control of his vehicle near the intersection of East California Avenue and South Rainbow Route. The vehicle veered off the roadway and flipped, landing on its roof in the canal below.
First responders arrived at the scene and found the vehicle upside down, submerged in approximately three feet of water, according to reports. They hurried to the vehicle hoping they would find no one inside. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. 19-year-old Vargas found in the driver’s seat. They quickly extricated the man from the vehicle and began performing life-saving treatment on the young man. Sadly, he had sustained fatal injuries in the accident and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The vehicle had to be pulled from the canal and flipped back onto its wheels, reports indicated. Officers gathered as much evidence as they could find and are working to better understand what happened on that road to cost Vargas his life.
