West Los Angeles, CA (April 8, 2024) It was 2:00 a.m. in West Los Angeles as vehicles drove along the Interstate 10 Freeway. The drive quickly turned to chaos as a Tesla headed the wrong way, causing a horrible collision that claimed the life of 19-year-old Jefferson Coreas-Lazo. Several others were injured, including minors, and the Tesla driver was arrested. It happened in the westbound lanes of the Santa Monica 10 Freeway just before 2:00 a.m.

Coreas-Lazo, a Maywood resident, was driving a 2016 Toyota with two juveniles in the vehicle with him. They were heading west on the Santa Monica Freeway, near Overland Avenue, when they suddenly saw headlights heading right toward them. A 2024 Tesla, driven by a 51-year-old woman from Los Angeles, was driving the wrong-way on the interstate. Coreas-Lazo had no time to react as the Tesla hit his Toyota head-on. Debris flew off the vehicles and hit a 2020 Infiniti that was also on the Freeway. The driver of the Infiniti didn’t stop, but fled the scene.

Emergency crews hurried to the scene and found the two badly damaged vehicles. They found Coreas-Lazo in the Toyota with a 15-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy. The two minors had sustained serious injuries n the accident and were both taken to a local hospital to receive emergency treatment. 19-year-old Coreas-Lazo, who was driving, was found trapped inside the vehicle. Sadly, he had sustained fatal injuries in the accident and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police officers arrested the woman who was driving the Tesla and she faces several charges.
