(Spring Valley, CA) A Jamacha Road collision resulted in the death of Miriam Nelly Valles, 50, of El Cajon, and several others injured when two vehicles crashed head-on near Sweetwater Reservoir, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday, October 18, on Jamacha Road near Darby Street. CHP officials said Valles traveled westbound in a 2021 Nissan Rogue. At some point, an eastbound 2010 Toyota Camry crossed a concrete median and slammed into her vehicle.
Paramedics transported Valles to a trauma center, where doctors later pronounced her dead. Three other adults, including both drivers, sustained serious injuries. A third victim, a child passenger from the Toyota, was taken to the hospital for evaluation. CHP Officer Jasmine Lopez said investigators believe intoxication may have contributed to the crash.
Perspective on the Jamacha Road Collision
Head-on collisions are among the most dangerous types of crashes due to the force of impact and limited reaction time for drivers. This incident will lead investigators to examine several potential contributing factors such as lane position, and roadway design.
When alcohol or drugs are suspected, California Vehicle Code 23152 becomes central to the investigation. This law prohibits operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. violating this law results in felony offenses for any resulting injuries or deaths. Even a momentary lapse in control caused by impairment can have devastating consequences on narrow roads.
If the Toyota driver crossed the median without maintaining lane discipline, California Vehicle Code 21651 applies. This prohibits driving to the left of a divided highway or median. Violating this statute can lead to catastrophic head-on impacts, as seen in this crash.
The CHP will continue its investigation to determine what led to the Jamacha Road collision and to confirm whether intoxication or another form of reckless driving caused the deadly impact.
