(Cathedral City, CA) An elderly man was killed Saturday morning, February 21, in an Interstate 10 collision.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly after 6:30 a.m. when a Lexus and a Toyota both traveled eastbound on Interstate 10. Investigators said the Lexus made an unsafe turn to the right at an unconfirmed speed and struck the Toyota.
Both vehicles veered off the roadway following the impact. CHP Officer David Torres said the Lexus came to rest in a body of water, while the Toyota overturned onto its roof and submerged in standing water from recent rain. The driver of the Lexus exited the vehicle, and three passengers in the Toyota were also able to get out.
Jose Crespo Guevara, 65, of Bell, was identified as the driver of the Toyota. He was extricated from the overturned vehicle and found unresponsive at the scene. Paramedics transported him to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, where he was pronounced dead.
The CHP identified the Lexus driver as Ricardo Antonio Avila. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. Authorities did not release additional background information about the suspect, and the case remained under active investigation.
Analysis on the Interstate 10 Collision
When a fatal freeway crash involves allegations of impaired driving, investigators review traffic safety laws to understand what factors may have contributed, without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews often focus on unsafe lane movements, impairment, and speed.
Because investigators said the Lexus made an unsafe turn, authorities may examine the Unsafe Turning or Movement Law. This law requires drivers to ensure any turning movement can be made with reasonable safety before changing direction. Sudden or improper lane changes at freeway speeds can significantly increase the risk of severe collisions.
Since a DUI arrest was reported, officials will also review the Driving Under the Influence Law. This law prohibits operating a vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs. Investigators typically rely on field observations, chemical testing, and witness statements when evaluating suspected impairment.
Authorities may further consider the Basic Speed Law if speed becomes relevant. This law requires drivers to operate at speeds reasonable for traffic and roadway conditions. These combined statutes guide CHP’s evaluation of the Interstate 10 collision as the case proceeds.
