(Indio, California) On October 4th, just after 9:30 a.m., a Indio wrong-way collision was reported shortly after a Mazda MPV crashed head-on onto a white Hyundai vehicle, killing one person and injuring two others.
According to CHP, the Mazda traveled the wrong-way onto the Monroe Street off-ramp when it hit the Hyundai vehicle while it was exiting the freeway. The Mazda then caught on fire, killing the driver. The 62-year-old Hyundai driver and the 58-year-old passenger were taken to the Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs.
It has been confirmed that the Mazda was also occupied by a 42 year-old and it was unknown whether that individual sustained any injuries.
Legal Analysis on the Indio Wrong-way Collision
When wrong-way collisions occur, investigators may want to review impairment and wrong way law codes to specifically understand why the driver violated these codes.
Because the driver drove the wrong-way, investigators may review California Vehicle Code 21656 as it requires drivers approaching a two-lane traffic going the opposite direction, shall turn away from the roadway onto a place that’s designated as a turnout. Because the driver failed to do so and collided head on onto the Hyundai vehicle, they have violated this code.
Investigators may also review California Vehicle Code 23152 since it seems that the driver was not aware of their surroundings, resulting in traveling the wrong-way. This law code prohibits drivers from driving under the influence of any drugs or alcohol beverages.
