(Sonora, CA) A Highway 49 crash resulted in the death of four people, all from Puerto Rico, and one injured in the Sonora area of Tuolumne County.
On Wednesday, July 23, at 5:54 p.m., the Highway 49 Crash occurred according to the California Highway Patrol. It happened at the intersection with Shaws Flat Road and Highway 49.
When CHP officers investigated, they learned a westbound Jeep Grand Cherokee stopped at the intersection. After stopping for a moment, the Jeep drove into the path of a northbound pickup truck. As a result of the Highway 49 crash, the Jeep drove off, landing on the west shoulder of Highway 49. The Jeep driver and his three passengers were pronounced dead at the scene. All four victims have been identified as Jose Ortacotto, 56, Jose Ortacarmona, 83, Elba Melendezdeorta, 72, and Michelle Cotto Rodriguez, 52. The pickup driver suffered moderate to major injuries.
