(Fresno, CA) A husband and wife were killed in a Highway 145 collision Monday night, December 29, when a suspected DUI driver struck their vehicle head-on.

The crash happened just before 7:30 p.m. south of Ford Avenue. CHP says Shawn Borecha, 30, of Riverside drove southbound on Highway 145 when he attempted to pass two cars. As a result, he veered into the northbound lane. His vehicle collided head-on with a Hyundai carrying Carlos Pimentel, 69, and his wife, Maria, 62, both Coalinga residents. The couple died at the scene.

Borecha suffered minor injuries. Officers arrested him on suspicion of DUI and multiple felony charges, including manslaughter. The investigation is ongoing.

Overview on the Highway 145 Collision

When a driver crosses into oncoming traffic while attempting to pass, investigators commonly review the Improper Passing Law. This law requires motorists to pass only when the opposite lane is clearly free of oncoming hazards. A violation can quickly result in a devastating head-on crash, as seen in this Highway 145 collision.

Because DUI is suspected, officers will also apply the Driving Under the Influence Law. Impaired drivers experience reduced judgment and slower reaction times, making unsafe maneuvers more likely. Determining the driver’s level of impairment helps establish criminal liability in fatal collisions.

Additionally, investigators may look to the Gross Vehicular Manslaughter While Intoxicated statute when impairment leads to a fatality. This law addresses situations in which reckless decisions made under the influence result in loss of life. Its review helps guide charging decisions in cases involving multiple deaths.
