(Bakersfield, CA) One person was killed early Monday in a Hermosa Road crash involving a semi-truck and a pickup in foggy conditions.

CHP officers dispatched at around 6:40 a.m. to the intersection of Hermosa Road and South Edison Road. Investigators say a 2016 International semi-truck traveled south on South Edison at about 35 mph. At the same time, a Toyota pickup headed west on Hermosa Road at an unknown speed. According to preliminary findings, both vehicles allegedly failed to stop at the posted stop signs, causing the pickup to collide with the semi.

The semi-truck driver did not sustain any injuries. Officials say it remains unknown whether DUI played any role in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.

Overview on the Hermosa Road Crash

When drivers fail to stop at marked intersections, investigators typically review the Stop Sign Requirements Law. This statute requires all motorists to come to a complete stop at posted signs and proceed only when it is safe. In a fog-affected area like Hermosa Road, determining whether either driver failed to properly stop is central to understanding how the crash occurred.

Because limited visibility was noted, authorities may also consider the Basic Speed Law. This law requires motorists to drive at speeds safe for conditions, including weather, fog, and reduced sight distance. Even if a driver is traveling below the posted limit, they may still be in violation if visibility is too limited to stop safely at an intersection.

Finally, when collisions occur at crossroads with unclear approach speeds, investigators often consult the Right-of-Way at Intersections Law. This law outlines how drivers must yield when multiple vehicles approach an intersection. Reviewing this rule helps determine whether failure to yield contributed to the Hermosa Road crash.

    Support for the Family

If someone you know was affected by this collision, you may contact the Bakersfield CHP office. They can provide updates and the official collision report. This document can clarify the sequence of events and contributing factors.

You may also wish to speak with a wrongful death or personal injury attorney to understand potential options for compensation related to funeral costs, medical bills, or other losses.

Local support organizations and counseling resources in Kern County can also offer compassionate help as families process the impact of this sudden and tragic crash.
