Monterey County, CA (February 5, 2024) A Saturday afternoon drive through Monterey County cost one man his life. In a sad turn of events, a 79-year-old man was driving his pickup when he was hit, head-on, by a vehicle driving the wrong way, authorities said. It happened just outside of Salinas on River Road.
The Pacific Grove man was heading north on River Road in his Ford F-250 pickup truck at approximately 2:40 p.m. when a southbound Audi SUV suddenly crossed the double yellow lines. There was no time to react and the two vehicles collided, head-on, in the northbound lane of River Road. The impact of the crash forced the pickup truck to rollover and land on its roof about 20 feet from the road.

Paramedics hurried to the scene and found the driver of the pickup truck unresponsive. They did everything they could to save the man’s life, but sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger was also in the pickup. Paramedics took her to a nearby hospital to receive treatment for injuries she sustained in the crash.
The driver of the Audi sustained minor injuries in the collision and received medical care from paramedics at the scene. Officers are investigating this Monterey County accident to determine if drugs or alcohol were a factor.
