Sonora, CA (May 31, 2024) The community of Sonora was saddened as news spread of a head-on collision that left one person dead. The fatal accident took place on State Route 20 near Smith Station Road right around 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, May 29th. Sadly, one person did not walk away from this violent, head-on collision.

It was a typical Wednesday afternoon in Sonora as vehicles drove along State Route 20. Without warning, and for reasons still unknown, two sedans suddenly slammed into each other, head-on, at approximately 1:00 p.m. Officers with the California Highway Patrol reported that the collision occurred near Smith Station Road. The two vehicles both sustained major damage in the accident and came to a stop in the middle of the highway, blocking traffic from both directions.

Emergency personnel arrived at the scene and found the two vehicles, both with completely smashed front-ends, sitting in the middle of the road, surrounded by glass and debris. The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office worked with the California Highway Patrol to evaluate those involved in the accident. Sadly, they found one person who had been killed in the collision, and pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

The California Highway Patrol Traffic Collision Unit is leading the investigation into this fatal collision. They are determined to figure out what caused this accident on State Route 20 and who was at fault. At this time, they do not know if drugs or alcohol were factors in this head-on collision. Tow trucks were called to the scene to remove both of the damaged vehicles from the highway, officers said. Crews worked as quickly as they could to remove the glass and debris from the roadway as well.
