(Long Beach, CA) A woman died Thursday, December 18, from injuries she suffered in a Gerald Desmond Bridge collision involving an SUV and a box truck, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 1:25 p.m. Thursday on the southbound side of the bridge near Pier D. CHP reported that the silver SUV overturned onto its side, blocking lanes. This prompted traffic to be diverted onto the new Long Beach International Gateway Bridge. The woman, who had been inside the overturned SUV, was transported to a Long Beach hospital. Despite life-saving measures, she died from her injuries at 3:54 a.m. Friday. Her name has not yet been released.

The bridge reopened around 4:40 p.m. after CHP cleared the scene. The investigation remains ongoing.

Opinion on the Gerald Desmond Bridge Collision

When an SUV overturns following a crash with a larger commercial vehicle, investigators often review the Commercial Vehicle Safety and Operation Law. This statute underscores the heightened responsibility placed on operators of heavy trucks, particularly on bridges and elevated structures where lane space is limited. Applying this law helps clarify how the truck and SUV interacted before the Gerald Desmond Bridge collision.

Analysts may also reference the Basic Speed Law. This rule requires motorists to drive at speeds that are reasonable for roadway design, traffic density, and weather conditions. Bridges can create unique hazards such as confined lanes and changing wind conditions, and investigators assess whether speed contributed to the SUV overturning.

Additionally, officers may look to the Lane Usage and Safe Movement Law. This statute requires drivers to remain within their lane until safe movement is possible. Reviewing this law helps determine whether either vehicle drifted or attempted a maneuver that led to the impact and subsequent rollover in the Gerald Desmond Bridge collision.

    Advice for the Family

If your loved one was the victim, you should request the full CHP collision report once it becomes available. It will provide essential information about the sequence of events and help guide any insurance or legal actions.

You may also want to consult a wrongful death attorney who can help you understand options related to funeral expenses, loss of support, and other financial considerations.

Lean on family, friends, and Long Beach community resources during this difficult time. Support and compassion can make navigating the days ahead a little more manageable.
