(San Jose, CA) A fiery three-vehicle collision left one woman dead, and a man critically injured over the weekend in a Foxworthy Avenue crash, authorities said.
According to the San Jose Police Department, the crash occurred around 2:35 p.m. Saturday, October 25, on Foxworthy Avenue, west of Jarvis Avenue, in the Willow Glen neighborhood.
Upon investigating, authorities learned a man driving a white 2018 GMC Denali SUV traveled east on the two-lane road. While attempted to pass a green 2018 Subaru Forester on the right. GMC struck the Subaru. It caused it to veer into the opposite lane and collide head-on with a blue 2012 Honda CR-V heading west.
By the time first responders arrived, they pronounced the woman driving the Honda dead at the scene, police said. The man driving the GMC sustained life-threatening injuries and was listed in critical condition. The Subaru driver was not hurt.
The crash remains under investigation by the SJPD Traffic Investigations Unit.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the victim.
Overview on the Foxworthy Avenue Crash
When a driver crosses lanes or attempts to pass unsafely, investigators consider the Unsafe Passing Law. This law prohibits drivers from passing another vehicle on the right unless it can be done safely. The maneuver described in this case may have contributed to the collision.
If excessive speed played a role, the Basic Speed Law also applies. It requires drivers to maintain speeds that are reasonable and safe for current conditions. Attempting a high-speed pass on a narrow residential street increases the risk of losing control and causing a severe crash.
Additionally, the Reckless Driving Law may be relevant. It prohibits operating a vehicle with willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property. These statutes will help investigators piece together how the Foxworthy Avenue crash occurred and determine whether charges are warranted.
