(Los Angeles, CA) One person was killed early Tuesday morning, November 4, in an Eastbound 10 Freeway accident involving a food truck and another vehicle that erupted into flames near Jefferson Park, authorities said.

According to Officer Elizabeth Kravig of the California Highway Patrol, the crash was reported around 2:15 a.m. on the eastbound Santa Monica Freeway, just south of Crenshaw Boulevard. Investigators said a food truck collided with another vehicle. As a result, the car became trapped underneath as both caught fire.

When Los Angeles Fire Department crews arrived, they found both cars on fire, working to extinguish the blaze. After putting out the fire, paramedics pronounced one person, a man, dead at the scene.

Paramedics transported a 32-year-old man from one of the vehicles to a local hospital. According to LAFD spokeswoman Lyndsey Lantz, his condition was not immediately known. Three lanes of the eastbound freeway and the Arlington Avenue exit were closed following the crash, and a SigAlert issued at 2:45 a.m. remained in effect for several hours before one lane reopened at 6:45 a.m.

Overview on the Eastbound 10 Freeway Accident

When a crash involves multiple vehicles and results in a fire, investigators typically review the Basic Speed Law. This statute requires drivers to operate at speeds that are safe for current traffic and roadway conditions. Traveling too fast at night or failing to maintain proper distance can increase the severity of freeway collisions.

If a vehicle became trapped underneath another, the Following Too Closely Law may also apply. It requires drivers to maintain a safe distance to allow adequate time to stop or react to sudden movements. In heavy freeway traffic, even a brief lapse in spacing can cause chain-reaction crashes.

Because this collision led to a fatality and significant property damage, the Reckless Driving Law could be reviewed. It prohibits operating a vehicle with willful or wanton disregard for the safety of others. These statutes will help CHP investigators determine what caused the Eastbound 10 Freeway accident and whether any violations contributed.
