Scripps Ranch, CA (December 1, 2023) Rob Mallory, 53, was killed in a collision between two dune buggies on Thanksgiving Day in Scripps Ranch, according to authorities. The tragic accident happened on a trail that the family had used many times before.

Rob Mallory was driving the dune buggy with his wife, Misty Mallory, his son, Dune Mallory and Dune’s girlfriend as passengers. Misty Mallory said the ride was a special one, as they were headed to see a desert memorial for Rob’s brother. As they headed down the trail, another dune buggy came speeding up from a side trail. Misty Mallory told police officers that the other dune buggy slammed into them, nearly head-on.

Following the collision, Misty had injuries to one of her knees, her son and his girlfriend were also injured. Rob, however, was seriously injured and unresponsive following the collision. Misty later described the accident as “absolutely violent.”

Police officers and paramedics arrived at the scene and found the injured family on the trail. An air ambulance was called to rush Rob Mallory to a hospital in Palm Springs. He was placed on life support until Monday, November 27th, when he was given the honor walk, according to authorities.

Even though the Mallory’s are mourning the loss of their father, husband and friend, his wife Misty shared that Rob’s generosity continues as his healthy organs will be given to those in need. He will now have his own desert memorial alongside his brother’s.

Officers continue to investigate this accident to try and determine what caused this fatal accident on dune buggy trails in Scripps Ranch.

Who Is At Fault In a Dune Buggy Crash In Scripps Ranch?

Hundreds of people are killed each year in off-road vehicle accidents, according to the Off-Highway-Vehicle-Related Fatalities Report. All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid causing accidents. This is especially true for commercial drivers that work for a city. A number of collisions are due to drivers that make dangerous left turns. Pursuant to California Vehicle Code 21801, the driver of any vehicle intending to turn left must yield the right of way traveling from the opposite direction close enough to pose a hazard.

If a negligent driver worked for a city, that city could potentially be liable in the event of an accident. Generally speaking, employers are vicariously liable for the negligent actions of their employees – insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their job duties. There are a number of steps that should be taken after a car accident.

    • Photos of the accident site should be taken.
    • Surveillance footage should be sought.
    • Medical records should be preserved.
    • Eye witnesses should be interviewed.
    • A thorough independent investigation should be conducted.
