(Los Angeles, CA) A 405 Freeway multi-vehicle collision resulted in the death of Crystal Diaz Martinez, 39, in the Palms neighborhood of Los Angeles.

On Sunday, August 31, at 3:10 a.m., the 405 Freeway multi-vehicle collision occurred. According to the California Highway Patrol, it happened on the southbound freeway, just north of West Pico Boulevard.

Officers reported that several vehicles collided in the early morning darkness, leaving the freeway covered with damaged cars and debris. When Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics arrived at the scene, they found Crystal Diaz Martinez. Despite performing life-saving measures, Martinez died from her injuries at the 405 Freeway multi-vehicle collision site.

Authorities closed all southbound lanes at 3:44 a.m., issuing a Sigalert. As a result, significant traffic delays occurred throughout the Palms area. Crews worked for several hours to investigate the accident, remove vehicles, and clear the freeway. Officials reopened the lanes at 7:13 a.m. after nearly four hours of closure.

Legal Opinion on the 405 Freeway Multi-Vehicle Collision

A lawyer speaks to a client regarding an accident.

The 405 Freeway multi-vehicle collision that killed Crystal Diaz Martinez highlights serious safety and legal issues. Crashes involving multiple vehicles often involve excessive speed, unsafe lane changes, or distracted driving. If authorities determine speed to be a factor, then this violates California Vehicle Code 22350. The Basic Speed Law requires drivers to travel only at speeds safe for current conditions. Even when driving under the posted speed limit, a driver can violate this law if traffic, weather, or road conditions call for slower speeds.

Another possible violation could be California Vehicle Code 21658. This law requires drivers to stay in a single lane and only change lanes when safe. If one driver swerved or merged recklessly, that driver could hold liability for the 405 Freeway multi-vehicle collision. If investigators determine reckless driving occurred, California Vehicle Code 23103 may also apply. This law prohibits operating a vehicle with disregard for the safety of others. A reckless act on a busy freeway can create a chain reaction that affects many innocent drivers.

    What the Family Can Do

The family of Crystal Diaz Martinez has the right to file a wrongful death claim under California Code of Civil Procedure 377.60. This law allows close relatives to seek financial support for funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and the income or services Crystal once provided. An experienced attorney can obtain the CHP report on the 405 Freeway multi-vehicle collision. They will also be able to review traffic camera footage and speak with witnesses. These steps will help establish which driver caused the crash. Taking quick legal action also ensures evidence remains preserved. While no legal claim can replace Martinez, pursuing a wrongful death case can help her family find accountability. It can also ease financial burdens during this difficult and overwhelming time.

We at Accident News Now extend our deepest condolences to the family of the victim. We know this is a difficult time as you mourn the tragic and sudden loss of a loved one.
