Contra Costa, CA (February 15, 2024) Another deadly crash took place on a California highway before the sun rose on Saturday. The violent head-on collision on State Route 4 claimed the lives of Andres Hernandez, 22, and Christopher Cannedy, 35, officers said. The deadly collision occurred just before 4:30 a.m., near Brentwood, on February 10th. The California Highway Patrol said that both drivers were, unfortunately, pronounced dead at the scene following the accident.

Initial reports indicated that a blue Scion TC was driving west on State Route 4, in the eastbound lanes. Another vehicle, a Mazda 3, was heading east in the same lane as the wrong-way driver. The two vehicles approached at high rates of speed, under the moon and street lights, until they collided, head-on. The sound of metal smashing into metal filled the early morning air. The dust and debris settled and the scene grew quiet again as sirens echoed in the distance.

The sirens screamed louder as emergency vehicles rushed to the scene. They arrived to find the Mazda and Scion both completely destroyed in the middle of the eastbound lanes. Paramedics rushed to the vehicles, prepared to use life-saving measures. Sadly, they found both drivers unresponsive inside their vehicles. Hernandez and Cannedy, both Oakley residents, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Crews worked to clear the debris, glass and liquid from the scene as the victims’ bodies were carefully removed from the damaged vehicles. The wreckage had to be hauled from the highway and investigators gathered evidence to help them understand what caused this traumatic collision on State Route 4.
