Vernalis, CA (September 23, 2024) The community of Vernalis was saddened as news of a fatal multi-vehicle accident spread. It all happened on Highway 132, not far from River Road, just before 1:00 p.m. Abel Velasquez, 26, was killed in this collision, officers reported. An 11-month-old child was airlifted with serious injuries and four others sustained minor injuries in this collision.

Initial reports indicated that a 2012 Honda SUV was headed west on Highway 132, driven by Hector Garcia. At the same time, a 2021 Toyota sedan was driving behind him with Lizandro Castillo behind the wheel. Following Castillo’s Toyota, was a 2004 Chevy van, driven by Esther Yahaira. Suddenly, a 2011 Honda sedan, driven by Velasquez, made a left turn and crossed the double yellow lines of the highway. The Honda sedan side-swiped the Honda SUV and continued into the westbound lane of the highway. It then collided head-on with the Toyota Sedan, officers reported.

Emergency personnel arrived at the scene and found Velasquez with fatal injuries. Unfortunately, nothing could be done and he was pronounced dead at the scene by authorities. An 11-month-old child was inside the Toyota sedan and sustained serious injuries. A medical helicopter was called to the scene and the infant was airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center in serious condition. Paramedics found four other people with minor injuries who were all treated at the scene.

Detectives are investigating this collision to determine what caused it. At this time, they have not determined if alcohol or drugs were factors in this deadly collision. Evidence was gathered at the scene and officers took statements before tow trucks began removing the damaged vehicles from the roadway.
