(Rosamond, CA) Two people were killed Wednesday afternoon, December 17, in a 70th Street West crash at Avenue A.
CHP says the collision occurred around 3:30 p.m. They learned a Honda Pilot traveled southbound on 70th Street West approached the intersection with Avenue A. At the same time, a Jeep Wrangler drove eastbound on Avenue A. For reasons still under investigation, the two vehicles collided in the intersection.
The Honda’s driver, Richard Madril Diaz, 80, died at the scene. A passenger in the vehicle, Maria De Jesus Zuniga Rivas, 65, was also pronounced dead. The Jeep driver sustained major injuries and was taken to Antelope Valley Hospital for treatment.
Analysis on the 70th Street West Crash
When two vehicles collide in an intersection, investigators typically look to the Right-of-Way Law. This statute guides how drivers should safely enter or cross intersections, especially when visibility or timing affects who must yield. Applying this law helps clarify how both vehicles approached the 70th Street West crash and whether one entered the intersection unsafely.
Because the crash occurred at what appears to be a rural, high-speed crossing, analysts may also review the Basic Speed Law. This rule requires drivers to maintain speeds that are reasonable for roadway and traffic conditions. Even lawful speeds can become unsafe if sight distance is limited or if two vehicles arrive at the intersection simultaneously.
Investigators may additionally reference the Lane Usage and Safe Movement Law. Though commonly applied to lane-drift scenarios, the statute’s principles help evaluate whether either driver made sudden or unsafe movements before the collision. Such analysis supports reconstruction efforts as officers determine how the 70th Street West crash unfolded.
