(Los Angeles, CA) One person died and several others sustained injuries in a 405 Freeway multi-vehicle collision in the Sawtelle neighborhood of Los Angeles.

On Monday, September 1, at 3:00 a.m., the 405 Freeway multi-vehicle collision occurred. According to investigators, it happened near Santa Monica Boulevard, just before the 10 Freeway interchange.

Upon investigating, officers learned at least four vehicles and a motorcycle were involved. Preliminary reports suggest the motorcyclist died in the crash, though authorities have not yet released their identity. After the collision, the victim’s body appeared to remain in the roadway, and reports indicated it may have been struck by other passing vehicles.

Emergency crews treated two additional people for injuries at the scene. Witnesses described chaotic moments as smoke rose from the freeway and drivers pulled over in confusion. Officials closed all southbound lanes for hours as investigators worked at the site. Crews cleared the scene, and lanes reopened at 7:30 a.m. The deadly 405 Freeway multi-vehicle collision remains under investigation.

Legal Opinion on the 405 Freeway Multi-Vehicle Collision

A lawyer speaks to a client regarding an accident.

The 405 Freeway multi-vehicle collision raises significant legal concerns, especially given the tragic death of the motorcyclist. Multi-vehicle freeway crashes often involve questions of speed, impairment, and failure to maintain control.

If alcohol or drugs contributed, this could violate California Vehicle Code 23152, which makes it illegal to drive under the influence. A DUI-related crash that causes death can also trigger charges under California Vehicle Code 23153, which addresses DUI with injury or death. These violations carry severe criminal and civil consequences. Even without DUI, freeway collisions often involve unsafe speed. Under California Vehicle Code 22350, known as the Basic Speed Law, drivers must never drive faster than conditions safely allow. Early morning hours, limited visibility, and freeway traffic can all affect what speed is considered safe.

If investigators confirm that a driver caused the 405 Freeway multi-vehicle collision by reckless or negligent actions, liability may extend to the death of the motorcyclist. In such cases, the victim’s family may file a wrongful death claim under California Code of Civil Procedure 377.60. This law allows families to pursue compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and the emotional toll of losing a loved one. Meanwhile, those injured in the crash may file personal injury claims to cover medical costs, rehabilitation, lost income, and pain and suffering.

    What the Family Can Do

The family of the deceased motorcyclist should seek legal counsel immediately. A wrongful death attorney can obtain the full CHP report, traffic camera footage, and eyewitness statements. Preserving this evidence early is critical in multi-vehicle crashes, where responsibility may be shared among several drivers. Attorneys can also work with accident reconstruction experts to determine who caused the initial impact and whether DUI, speeding, or distraction contributed. At the same time, injured victims should pursue personal injury claims to recover costs and secure compensation for their suffering.

While no legal action can undo the loss, pursuing justice through the legal system can provide accountability and financial support. The aftermath of the 405 Freeway multi-vehicle collision highlights how quickly tragedy can strike and why legal action may help families find stability in the wake of sudden loss.

We at Accident News Now extend our deepest condolences to the family of the victim. We know this is a difficult time as you mourn the tragic and sudden loss of a loved one. If you have any concerns about navigating the legal process surrounding this horrible incident, call 866-883-4318 to speak with a lawyer.
